Every sheet is a
specimen, a place
and a date.

A herbarium sheet is a plant flattened between sheets of blotting paper, mounted on card, and labelled. What you are looking at on this page is the drawing of that card: the pressed plant, the accession stamp, the collector's hand, and the small institutional label in the corner that nobody could throw away.

Nobody has ever found a pressed flower beautiful, and that is the point. The collection exists to be evidence — that a plant grew in a place, at a size, on a day somebody cared enough to stop.
