The purest form. It contains everything and excludes nothing, which is why it was taught first.
Direction without compromise. A triangle points, and pointing is a claim about hierarchy.
Honesty of angle. The square is the only shape that cannot be argued with: it stands where it is put.
Primary red, primary yellow, primary blue — and the discipline to let one of them carry the whole poster.
The Bauhaus poster workshop was the only place in Europe where typography, colour and geometry were taught as a single subject. Students arrived with painting skills and left able to design a whole room.
What survives from that workshop is not a style but a procedure: reduce the message, find the grid, choose one primary colour, set the type without apology, and print it at the size of the street.
The studio on the left is a small machine for running that procedure. Change the palette, the scale, the rotation; press Neues Plakat for a new composition drawn from the same vocabulary.
