Specimen FB-04 · Halden Field Lab

Ferrous Bloom

A study in obedient liquid. Bring the magnet close and the black pool forgets it is a puddle.

01 · Suspension

Rust you can pour

Nanoscale grains of magnetite drift in a carrier oil, each coated so it never clumps. At rest the pool is a perfect black mirror.

02 · Instability

The threshold

Past a critical field, a flat surface costs more energy than a crowded one. The liquid gives in all at once, in a lattice of evenly spaced peaks.

03 · Release

Memory of none

Lift the magnet and the crowns collapse with a small shiver, back to glass. The fluid keeps nothing; that is its whole charm.
