The Meridian Walk

3.8 miles · seven stops · est. 1931
K&F
i

The Ropewalk 0.0 mi

A quarter-mile shed where hemp was twisted into anchor line. It was built straight to the inch; walk all of it.

ii

Salt Steps 0.6 mi

Ninety-one granite treads, worn into shallow bowls by four centuries of fishwives and their baskets.

iii

Chandler’s Row 1.3 mi

Brass, tar and tallow. The shop with the green door still sells its candles by weight, wrapped in yesterday’s tide tables.

iv

The Tide Clock 2.0 mi

A single iron hand that tells you not the hour, but the height of the sea against the harbour wall.

v

Lantern Quay 2.9 mi

Wait for dusk. The keeper lights the eleven lamps from east to west, and never the other way round.

vi

Home by the Ferry 3.8 mi

The last crossing leaves at 9:40. Sit on the left to watch the town fold itself away behind you.

Fold it back along the creases it already knows.

Printed on ninety-gram cartridge paper and folded by hand, six times, at a long table above Harbour Lane. Every guide is a little stiff at first; by the third walk it opens like a habit.
