The Lapis Road

The Lapis RoadDay 4

Qessra Spice Gate

We entered by a gate the color of crushed paprika, its indigo tiles still warm from the noon kiln. Sacks of bark and seed leaned like sleeping animals. A clerk stamped our ledger with a thumb the shade of dusk, and the whole road smelled of copper, cumin, and rain.

The Lapis RoadDay 12

Seralune High Pass

Above the tree line the pass lay like a page of snow ruled in ink-black rock. Wind lifted the bells from our lead mule and set them down where sight failed. We filed between cliffs that refused the word shelter and spent each small breath as if it were coin.

The Lapis RoadDay 19

Orilu Oasis

Night at the oasis was palm-black, cut only by a moon thin as a filed coin. Water clicked under the mats. Someone fried dates in a pan the size of a shield, and the camels knelt in a circle as if guarding a secret they had agreed not to sell.

The Lapis RoadDay 27

Pellquor Paper Market

In the quiet paper market, pale sheets hung like sails the color of warm bread, each corner bitten by a seal of drying red. A woman weighed our whole route by the creases we had already made. She would not sell us a fresh map. The road kept the receipts.
