The Ninth Stair
Filed after lights-out, Halden Arms. On the second flight, maple treads have worn to the color of cold tea. Between the landing and the door stenciled 2C, one step refuses the pattern. It is the ninth. The others carry cigarette ghosts, heel cups, and the soft collapse of old varnish. The ninth is pale oak, fastened with screws that still shine. The superintendent's ledger names a radiator, a hinge, and cream paint. It does not name lumber. A tenant says the stair used to answer a particular weight and then, on a Tuesday, went mute. The print in this sleeve never came up: a gray-green field, white-bordered, as if the camera declined the thought. Fresh varnish hides under landing dust. I counted twice. Eight old. One new. A nail sits in the rail where no banister screw belongs.
Five names on the right-hand board. Click two in sequence to draw a red string. Click the same pair again to lift it.
Two strings are already tied.
- Varnish on the ninth tread is younger than the wax along the banister.
- Brass screws hold the new step; every neighbor still wears iron nails.
- Tuesday's night book jumps from midnight to two, and the next line is another hand.
