Issue 07 — Cloth & Weather
The walk
Weather arrived as a habit, not an event. The coat took the door before the street had agreed on a temperature, wool still holding the hallway, shoulders set for a wind that was only a rumor at the corner. Rain found the nap and stayed. It moved the way rain moves on a garment that has already learned the route: over the collar, along the stitch, into a hem that darkens in one clean line and no further. Nobody hurried. A winter is not kept by speed.
Counted in crossings, not in seasons.
A coat keeps a winter the way a seam keeps a shape: by refusing, quietly, to come apart.
The return
On the way back the storm flap had finished its work and forgotten it. Water beaded, failed, and beaded again. Nothing in the cloth asked to be admired. The lining stayed shut where the draft had expected an opening; the warp held; the button remembered its hole. The Paris desk writes this without a moral. Wool, rain, repetition. Late frost still living in the seams after the month has pretended to thin.
The flap does not announce itself.
