A quiet house above the Atlantic

Twelve rooms, one long terrace, and a tide that sets the pace of the day. Casa Maré is a place to do less, slowly and well.

The house

Built from the cliff's own limestone, opened to the sea on every side.

Casa Maré began as a fisherman's storehouse in 1911. We kept the thick walls and the long shaded loggia, and added only what the light asked for: deep linen beds, hand-glazed tiles, a saltwater pool cut into the rock.

Experiences

Days shaped by the tide table

Nothing is scheduled that the sea would not approve of. Ask at the desk, or simply follow the light.

01
06:40 · sunrise

Swim at first light

The saltwater pool is warmest before the wind arrives. Towels and coffee wait on the ledge.

02
09:00 · low tide

Rock-pool walk

Our marine biologist neighbour leads a slow walk along the exposed shelf, naming anemones.

03
13:30 · lunch

Grill on the terrace

Whatever came in on the boats this morning, cooked over vine cuttings, eaten under the loggia.

04
17:00 · golden hour

Sail to the caves

A wooden boat, a quiet skipper, and the grottoes of Ponta da Piedade lit from within.

05
21:30 · dark sky

Stars from the roof

The village lights go off at nine. A telescope, blankets, and someone who knows the constellations.
