A specimen is not a poster. It is a promise that the type will behave at every size, in every weight, on every page that follows. Set the same sentence eight pixels high and ninety-six pixels high and watch how the letterspacing has to change: tight at the top, open at the bottom, never the same twice.
Everything here is one ink. There is no gradient, no photograph, no second colour to hide behind. When the only variable is scale, the drawing has to carry the whole composition.

The waterfall above is a lie of convenience: it pretends that a family is nine neatly separated stops. In truth the eye reads weight as texture, and texture is what the page is made of. A paragraph set light reads as air; the same paragraph set black reads as architecture.
Below, the alphabet is laid out as a grid because a grid is honest. Twenty-six cells, each one the same size, each one asked to hold its own against its neighbours. The numerals follow, with tabular figures so the columns of a table never wobble.
